As we make our way into the new year, you’re probably noticing a shift in your skin. It may be feeling drier, tighter, or more dull than usual and your go-to products may not be providing the amount of moisture your skin needs.
The colder air and harsh winds are tough on our skin and can dehydrate and cause irritation in our skin barrier. If you’re wondering how to combat the side effects of chilly weather, we’ve created a new routine to get you through this season with comfortable, hydrated, and glowing results.
Protect Your Winter Skin
Blustery, cold weather conditions can wreak havoc on your skin and irritate the top layer, also known as the skin barrier. Here’s how to update your skin routine to support your barrier through the winter months.
Cleanser
In the winter, we like to skip foaming cleansers and opt for a balm or oil cleanser. They tend to be gentler and don’t strip the skin of its natural oils while cleansing. Here are a couple of our favourites:
- I’m From Fig Cleansing Balm removes impurities and makeup while adding vitamins and antioxidants back into the skin.
- Klairs Gentle Black Fresh Cleansing Oil deeply cleanses skin while replenishing moisture with Jojoba Seed Oil and Black Currant Oil.
Moisturizer
Your gel-cream might not be doing the trick right now, and that’s okay. Save it for spring and summer and switch to a thicker, more nourishing cream for the winter months. We love Dr Hedison’s Premium Peptide Multi-Cream for the colder weather because it is formulated with 9 Peptides to support your barrier and Hylauronic Acid to gently replenish your skin with hydration.
Serums & Ampoules
We deal with transepidermal water loss in the winter which means that our skin loses water due to environmental factors. Because of this water loss, you’ll want to focus on products that are going to bring moisture back into your winter skin. For an everyday serum, we have been loving the Toun28 Centella Asiatica + Peptide Serum as it contains skin-strengthening Peptides and nourishing Cocoa Seed Butter to soften skin.
For a weekly treatment, try the By Wishtrend Hydra Enriched Ampoule to provide comforting hydration with 70% Aloe Barbadenis Leaf Polysaccharides.
Eye and Lip Care
The eye and lip areas have the thinner, more delicate skin that requires special care and gentle hydration. Through the winter months, we love to use creamier and richer treatments for these areas. Our favourites have been:
- Klairs Fundamental Nourishing Eye Butter. This ultra-rich eye cream delivers protective moisture to your delicate eye skin and smooths fine lines.
- Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. This lip mask is a cult favourite for a reason. Bursting with antioxidants and Vitamin C, this lip mask deeply nourishes dehydrated lips.
Body Moisturizer
We haven’t forgotten about body care. Our legs, arms, and hands can get uncomfortably dry in the winter weather. Try Benton’s Shea Butter Coconut Hand & Body Lotion Set this season. They each contain 20% rich, nourishing Shea Butter which works to tackle skin dryness and protect skin against the elements.
Bonus
If you’re feeling especially dry or dehydrated, pour yourself and steaming tea and sit back with one of Barulab’s Hyularon Hydrating Sheet Masks. These sheet masks have an instant calming and moisturizing effect and a little self-care is always a good idea.
